i currently have a caravan that weighs approx 1300kgs. i am thinking of purchasing a van with a kerb weight of 1579 and top weight of 1756. we dont ever carry any thing much in the van even down to the food we buy when we have set up. Prob realistically looking at 1650kg. does any body tow this weight and if so whats it like. secondly it is fitted with a alko atc(new trailer control system). would this counter act against the tsp on the antara. mine is a 2013 184 se nav auto.

Smino,

Putting driving licences to one side.

The auto has a max tow of 1700kg. so as long as you keep the actual weight of the caravan at or below this, you will be ok.
My concern is your ability to do this.
If the k/w is 1579kg this would only leave you with 121kg for bits and pieces ???

As for the car itself it will not have a problem coping with the weight in respect of bhp and Nm.
The max tow is limited by the auto gearbox as the manual has a max of 2000kg.

As a guide my caravan has a max of 1630kg and i run very close to that, with my 163 auto.

I know there are a few others on here with heavy caravans who will offer their opinion.

As for the ATC a call to ALKO and Vauxhall would be your best bet.
Can't see any issue as one does the car the other the caravan.
Antara is not the only towcar with this system and there hasn't been any mention of any manufacturer having problems, only any forum i visit.

Despite the Antaras towing capability beware that if you have a genuine GM/Vauxhall towbar fitted, these have a maximum tow weight of 1650kgs.

Very strange really

Very strange indeed.
How did you come about this information ?

I have a GM/VX towbar fitted and the info is in the paperwork that came with the towbar
1650kgs seems odd when they (VX) suggest that the 163 BHP Manual can tow up to 2000Kg

Glad I fitted a Witter

Witter here also.

Bet the VX/GM one is a common make also and as such i would be inclined to contact VX technical to clarify.

My guess it is a generic weight specification and not vehicle type.
For example the "S" figure (nose weight, static vertical load) on my fixed swan neck towbar plate is 135kg, but as we know max nose weight for the Antara is 80kg.

Yes i have a witter fitted so will get out the paper work cheers for that
Just looking at a witter detachable what sort of cost are you looking at for the whole job doing?Edited by: Thegasman
Well if u see what it intails and your handy with a spanner or two it not hard to fit.6 bolts (3 either side). And the wiring is plug and play on a single socket.i can send some pictures

I had a mobile fitter fit it on my drive.
I may have paid a bit more for this service but it was convenient.
I paid £450
I was quoted well over £600 from VX.
Hi Ken,I have always fitted my own towbars and electrics, that is until they invented modern cars with computer management etc. Since then I have been told that when fitting the electrics the car electronics have to be reprogrammed to allow for the caravan. Not sure if this is true or just a sales ploy, although I have noticed similar statements when looking at towbar suppliers sites. Does the mobile fitter have the facilities to perform the reprogramming or is it not necessary?
That would be great thanks ,rang the tow bar fitter up said it was a 4hr job and was wanting to know if my bran new Antara had trailer prep quoted me £580 for a witter detachable with vauxhall electrics.
Hi, That one puzzled me too. I asked the caravan club the question. The figure of 2000Kg comes from a pulling standard on a set incline from a standing start. 2000kg is the maximum it can haul from 0.

When towing a rule of 85% of the kerb weight of the tow vehicleis a good guide. I tow at 91% with my mondeo at present, but its a bit twitchy, hence the Antara on order.

hope this helps
