Took my Ant into Arnold Clark today to have a tow bar & electrics fitted 13 pin plug . Ordered it when I bought the car it was part of the deal ,being an experienced caravaner and now how ordering and fitting a caravan electrics can get very confusing so I pestered them to make sure they ordered the right electrics I even went in again to make sure and asked if I could look at them they said no need to as they got the right ones , so guess what ,they rang me up at home telling me they have to keep the car an extra day as they got the wrong electrics there must be a moral in this but I haven't thought about one yet

Make sure they have fitted full wiring kit as the Antara wiring kit is in two parts, one for road lights etc and the other for fridge and battery charging. There are a couple of threads on here if you do a search.

It's surprising but I know that the dealers rarely have the experience with tow bars as they take more time to fit than they want to apply doing it so not worth the hassle to them, 90% of the time they out source it either bringing somebody into the dealer or sending the car out, I actually asked that mine be fitted by a local independent (Chester tow bars on my case) as part of the sale and specified the Witter with dedicated electrics, I also believe the official Vauxhall tow bar has a lower tow rating than the 2000kg the car can tow, correct me if this is 🐂 💩 ..
Ps - the wife showed me how to find these stupid pictures on the ipad .. Blame her..

Hi all,

This is the second reference concerning the tow rating of the official vx tow bar. Can any one tell me where this figure, whatever it is, is coming from. The last person to bring it up quoted a page in the tow bar fitting instructions, which having a vx bar I still have, and I can find no reference to any max tow weight. The manual car is rated at 2000Kg and vx supply and in the case of my dealer fit the bar, so it is reasonable to assume that the bar is rated at 2000kg. Or am I missing something here?

Hi Terry & June,

Mine is just coming up to two years old now. When I had the vx bar fitted I specified and paid for 13 pin electrics. Upon collection I checked the socket and low and behold no fridge wiring. The dealer eventually outsourced this wiring to a specialist, as their electrician could not sort it. Upon inspection under the boot there is a single vx supplied loom that connects to a socket under the rear o/s and this loom does not include the fridge. So you pay for 13 pin but get 11!

Further research reveals that many car manufacturers omit these two wires.

Now spare wheels are a whole new ball game!!

They said they get someone from Warrington to come to Blackpool, to fit the towbar so I assume it's someone who knows what he's doing, about the wiring for the fridge and the need for a smart relay switch I tried explaining to them what is was but I would have been better talking to the wall I finished writing down the name of the switch and told them that's what was needed operate the fridge when the caravan is being towed ,I just wonder how these people get through the day they just keep nodding there heads smiling and telling you a load of rubbish ,it's a pity they don't spend more time learning there trade.

The sagar continues about the tow bar was told I will have to wait another day the wiring loom it seems was out of stock so it will be tomorrow Friday "fingers crossed "lucky I still have the courtesy car ,when I asked the service guy about the chappie having to come back again from Warrington to fix it he new nothing about anyone from Warrington,he has his own guy trained up to do it , so it just shows what these salesmen say is never to be trusted they just make stuff up for what ever reason we will probably never know

I have a 13 pin plug on my Antara already fitted by Vauxhall when I bought the car (it was a 5 month old demonstrator). Just found out that the garage didn't connect all the pins so my Alko atc on my caravan does not activate and the fridge does not work when towing. Local dealer contacted the vauxhall garage that sold it to me and they don't want to know. Looks like I will have to pay for it myself which is disappointing.

Should be an easy fix, sounds like they haven't fitted the second harness for fridge and battery, the cables run under the car so no removing interior trim, this part is an option on tow bar fit, just a pain they didn't do it originally. Edited by: SJG

Finally took my car to have the tow bar fixed. Took it to a local guy who is a registered fitter and has fitted two tow bars on my previous cars. Glad I didn't take on myself when I found out what Vauxhall had done. Apparently they had fitted the complete wiring including the relay for the fridge and alko ATC. However what they had done was cut the plug off the ends and wired it in direct but wrongly, bypassing the relays and joining bits of wire together to make it long enough. Unbelievable!! Guy did a complete rewire with additional fuses that are accessible and I can change myself for £40 all in. Everything now works fine.

I have been down this road.
The rated weight of a trailer is 2000kg. This figure is (according to the caravan club) the maximum weight of a trailer that can be towed from a standing start on a set gradient. This does not mean that your Antara will tow a 2000Kg caravan safely. My towbar states that it can take 150Kg nose weight, however the Antara is only rated at 80Kg,so the figure to use is the 80kg.
There are many matching services that can be used to match a caravan and towcar. Generally for a novice its 85% of the kerb weight, but it can go to 90% or even slightly higher for an experienced "tower".
This rating is definitely confusing.
