So went to our Vauxhall dealer today and bought the oil,filter and sump plug washer, all genuine parts for our cars 1st service and the total was........ £45!
Abit cheaper than a VAUXHALL service!

I forgot to add that it was trade club prices. As for the warranty I'm just gonna rock up with the receipts and show them and see what they say. The rest of the 1st service is only checking things which I can check.
Even if they say no I'm not that bothered as most of the expensive parts of the car aren't covered by the warranty anyway!

What would worry me and it just happened to someone I know who bought an Antara because he knew I liked my one so much.

He has had his Antara for just over a year when it broke down smoke coming from under the bonnet etc. So it got towed to the dealer to be told it was the cylinder head which was covered by the warranty but in the course of doing the work they found more problems so Vauxhall decided to replace the whole engine instead. Now I would be worried if I turned up without a service stamp I could only imagine they wouldn't need much of an excuse not to pay for the repairs and they certainly wouldn't replace the engine.

Its a bit like insuring your car 3rd party fire and theft.

When you get your car serviced I was led to believe in the past that it does not have to be the dealer but as long as you use genuine. Parts (say Vauxhall or Nissan ) and have your book signed you are ok with the warranty, personally and this is just me I would get it serviced at the dealer as in the past I have had two new cars that the engine had blown and had to be replaced mind you one was only 6/8 weeks old and that was our Pathfinder and the other one was a Nissan Tirrano if you remember them.

Under block exemption you must service the car using technically similar parts and should be stamped by a VAT registered garage. Now there is some arguments over whether they need to be VAT registered or not, and how you determine if they are technically similar. Mine will be serviced by myself using genuine parts and stamped at a garage that I used to work at. I am a qualified mechanic so they have no argument about that, but whether Joe public could get away with similar I dont know.

True. If you have a large warranty claim on a DMF or gearbox say, I am willing to bet that they will not honour the warranty. I change the engine oil mid service with the correct oil and VX filter but will not tell them.

They have no right to argue against it if it within the warranty period. That is the whole point of block exemption to stop main dealers from forcing customers to have their vehicles serviced with them. As long as the vehicle is serviced inline with manufacturer recommendations, they must honour the warranty.

I'm sure that if you read the warranty conditions, in the small print it will state that the vehicle has to be maintained to the manufacturers schedule and using OE parts. Not necessarily a main dealer service but as mentioned a VAT registered garage.
