Mysterious yellow light?

7820 Views 32 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  wilma08
Hi All,Now it is probably just me not reading the handbook .... but does anyone out there know what the purpose of the yellow coloured light is, that shines down onto the centre consul from the underside of the interior mirror?
I have been meaning to ask all summer and just driving home tonight in the dark has jogged my memory.

It just the ambient night light. Nearly all Vauxhalls have it.

It comes in handy when you need to find something.

What, like a pub or vx garage?

Sorry Grumps, never owned a vx before and could find no mention of it in the handbook.

Thanks for the info.

No probs it does take a bit of getting used too it.
I have never noticed it, I will have to investigate this
I tend to switch the illumination off as I prefer a darker 'cab' when driving at night. The wife, on the other hand, likes it on so as she can find her spearmint 'chewy' and other stuff that she's left loafing around the centre console!

Were is it
On the rear view mirror. There are actually 2 LEDs on it, either side of the 'power' button.
A green one on the left, which is illuminated by default at ignition on and is part of the anti-dazzle feature; there is also an orange one on the right, which is sometimes difficult to see in the daylight but comes on when you have your lights on.
When it's dark, holding up your hand to the underside of the mirror will reveal the source of orange glow, as it sitsin the palm of your hand.... You can turn it off using the same 'power' button on the mirror.

Thanks Lazarus when I go to change the car around to let hubby's in I will look at it
Hi Lazarus,Thanks for that info, I have looked at the two squares either side of the power button and whilst seeing the green I have never noticed that the other is orange. I will have a good look next time I go out, not going now it's chucking it down.
I assume it is the same on a 2012 model and not a new feature!

The orange one on the right is actually the sensor for rear dazzle, not a light, it doesn't illuminate but does show a wee bit of orange from the under/ambient orange light.

Hi ChumBucket,Yes you are correct. I have looked at mine carefully, the RH square is the sensor and not a light although it does glow orange slightly at night.

So is it possible to turn off the yellow light?

I don't know if you can turn it off but I do know that it DOESN'T turn off by turning off the anti-dazzle (green light) feature.
Correct again, perhaps you can't turn it off.

To be honest Dave47, I quite like it!!

Never had that feature on a car before, I find it both unobtrusive & very useful at night.

No I have never come across this feature before and if I am honest it was months before I noticed it. However in my defence I did buy the car in the summer.

Never noticed until the other day after reading this post although I have had my car 6 months
Okay, in my earlier 'revelation' I may have used the term
'light' incorrectly. As someone has mentioned since then, the sensor glows
orange in the lower half of the dazzle sensor; which may in fact be just a
pick-up from the amber down-light feature. <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

The Amber downlightcan be turned off though. Just press and hold
the mirror 'power' button (for the anti-dazzle) and the amber light will be
extinguished also.

As a matter of interest, the amber light only comes on at
a certain darkness level, not at the point of turning your headlights on
(unless it's dark of course).

You can trick it into revealing itself by putting your
thumb over the front r/h sensor (the one I called an orange light)and your left hand over the mirror's rear (windscreen facing)
light sensor; in a few seconds the car thinks it's dark and the amber downlight
will illuminate! It will go off again once your hands are removed, if the ambient light level is bright enough.

All information comes courtesy of my idle curiosity and experimentation whilst sitting in the car waiting for the missus.I have since ordered a 'life' from amazon but,
it could be a while before it's delivered....

Happy tweaking!
