Mirror Glass ££ WTF!!

The wife phoned me to say that a van had hit the drivers wing mirror on a narrow lane and the glass was all busted up. The glass and holder was hanging out by 2 wires, so she managed to find a lay-by and pop it back in, unfortunately the shorter black wires had disconnected and it was too dark for her to fix them.

We enquired about replacement glass with VX ..Some mis-communication meanthe quoted me for the Door Glass which was a reasonable £92.

"Ah no mate, I meant wing mirror glass" says I ..

"That's £240!" WTF!!!

That small bit of glass is over twice as much as a frickin' window!!!!

B***ks to that! I think we can do without the anti-chromatic, auto-dim coating. So a trip to the 'Wing Mirror Man' store online sees me getting a replacement complete with heated baseplatefor £35.

Be careful with your wing mirrors people! Press the button and put them in when on narrow lanes!

Better than pressing the button. Don't let the wife drive.
Over the years my failing memory has meant I have driven into my garage without remembering to fold the mirrors on several occassions. It has cost me a pretty penny in repair costs, especially if the glass breaks. I can't help but think VX has failed its customers by not making the folding mirrors fold automatically whenever an obstruction is detected.

At £240 for a mirror's worth, it works out the glass is around £10,3K per Sq.M.

That'd be expensive item over the mantelpiece!

Had to replace the whole mirror (drivers side) cost me £375. With VAT and labour costs came to £475. Wrote to Mr Harvey at Vauxhall complaining about this rip-off and his PA sent it on to the Manager of Customer Services and guess what ? Never heard a @$*** thing.
Scrap yard or breakers on line be cheaper !
Can I join this discussion? I have just had my wing mirror trashed by Mr. White Van-Mann! Had a word with the local Vauxhall people and it will be the thick end of £500! My question is, is the Captiva the same mirror mechanism as the Antara. I have seen a few Captiva mirrors for less than half the price of the Antara. Cheers :O)
Chrisg, Thanks for that, but it's not just the mirror it's the 'gibbuns' behind it. The connection that connects the mirror to the motoring bits is broken and the unit only comes as a 'oner' from Vauxhall, but all I need is the connector, frustrating!
Can you not solder the wires back, alternately maybe an auto electrician could fix it.
Well, I thought I'd let you know about the saga of my O/S wing mirror. After being let down by a breaker up in Glos. I found a complete N/S Wing Mirror on FleaBay. On my broken motor unit it had a big L and R and I took a punt that the piece was common to both sides so I bought the N/S one for £80. The mirror drive unit is common to both sides you just orientate the way you require and the screw holes match up. So the mirror is now in full working order at a fraction of the cost of going to the dealer. Now I have an outer N/S casing that I will probably try and sell. Hope this helps someone. Cheers!
