front shock absorbers leaking + oil leak from the

Hi all.

Just had my car mot and service completed. Car age 3 years old, mileage 34,765.

Mot passed however on the service they found that both front shock absorbers needed replacing due to a leak plus they found a oil leak from the sump meaning that all the bonding material needed stripping, new material applying and a further 24hrs before oil could be re introduced. my car went in on Wednesday morning. I was told I would have it back by Saturday, however no phone call nothing. Finally got my car back today, Monday. Has this happened to anyone else on here having these faults???

The only saving grace was that I was 2 days within the 3 year part of my life time warranty and they repaired problems free of charge. However the price vauxhall charges sometimes makes me nervous about the future of my car.

My car is 6 months old and 8000 miles, it was in last week for major oil leak from sump. Not happy about it.
Front shock absorbers leaking are very common on the Antara.
There are a lot of unscrupulous MOT testers. They put a drop of oil from an oil can on the shock and then fail the car. I know this is a fact because I saw it happen at a big tyre and exhaust centre that covers all the country.
I have never seen or heard of that, but I don't deny that it could happen. The best advise is to use a reputable garage.I work in a college as a motor vehicle lecturer and have been a vehicle technician in the past. I still deal with ex students who are now working in main dealers and have a good relationship with many othermain dealers too. I have been told by some technicians there that Antaras are prone to damper oil leaks within the first two years from new and are being replaced under warranty even before they get to MOT time.
Hi, They did it to my wife when she had a free brake check some years ago. This time it was a brake cylinder. Took no chances and took it to a local garage and he changed it for me. He showed me that the cylinder was dry past the dust seal and up to the cylinder seal. The "leaking" fluid was thicker and a different colourthan the brake fluid!
Wasted my money, but you cant take a chance on brakes. Again another big tyre and exhaust company.
Ask some of your students, you may be shocked.

...so Im being advised that my front shock absolbers have been inspected and are 'damp'. WFT does that mean - they are broken, need imminent replacement, will last another year....whaaa?

Anyone had that already, thoughts? At 215 per shocker its a bit of a shocker lol
WOW £215 per shock that is steep!!!! I had my back shocks looked at a while back as i thought they were leaking but but nothing came of it! My Antara is 4 year old and no problems on the front shocks (im touching wood!!!) I seem to have had the other common problems tho so im going to keep an eye on my shocks and hopefully they wont leak!
ok just had a thought, would the shocks not be covered under life time warranty??

Where would he shocks be leaking, top, middle or bottom??
They claimed leaking at the top, but no lifetime warranty for me I wasnt the first owner... Sadly.
I've just been told one shock has got to be replaced and guess what its just a few months out of the 3 year parts warranty. Its not the first thing that i have had to cough up for since then. Funny how all these things are suddenly happening now. Ive been quoted £800 at Vauxhall.
I bought non genuine shocks for £220 for the pair and fitted them myself. Add in £50 for a pair of anti roll bar links as you usually have to cut these off.

£800 seems very high for 1 shock absorber. With the right tools available you could change it in under an hour on the Antara, they're easy to do. The only grief might be the anti roll bar link, but even then 5 minutes with a cutting disc and it will be off.
i am curretly at 52k and 19 months old.gonna get the 60k service done at around 58k as i have heard stories that dealers refuse to fix anything under warranty if you are just a couple of miles over the 60k.
so it can have a good old check over at 58k
