It certainly looks like the official vx detachable unit - unfortunately it's not suitable for us as the car will be towing livestock and we require a fixed unit with a greater towing capacity than the 1300Kg that this accessory is rated at.
Thanks for the photo, I hope someone pops along and buys it!
This figure of 1300kg keeps cropping up as theofficial limit for the vx approved tow bar. I have had one fitted for the last two years and nowhere does it state this figure on eitherthe literature that came with the bar, or on the bar it's self.
So where is 1300kg stated please?
The towbar is towards the bottom of the page and reads:
"Removable tow bar. Especially designed for Vauxhall Antara this removable tow bar is made of high-quality steel with a max tow load of 1,300 kg and complies with Vauxhall quality and safety standards. Removable tow bar with 12S electrics (fitted) - £555. Removable tow bar with 12N electrics (fitted) - £620"
Hi Laz,Thanks for the link, to the best of my knowledge this is new and certainly wasn't stated when I ordered my car and tow bar. I tow a Coachman which weighs in at 1600kg so would not have ordered this if I had known. Having said that it looks the same although the locking mechanism on mine is black not blue.
I can only assume/hope that they have changed the design to one with a lower limit to save costs, typical vx build a car with 2000kg towing limit and supply a bar for 1300kg.
Anyway just towed almost 2000 miles through France down to the Med and nothing hasfallen off yet!
I think the admin may have to split this thread as it seems to have strayed a little from the 'for sale' topic.
At the risk of moving it further afield, I would dread to think Dave47 what the insurance company would have made of it had something of happened on your journey; the way they look for excuses not to pay out nowadays, the fact that a towbar limit was being exceeded may be enough for them to cry "foul" and wash their hands of it, leaving otherwise honest people with heavy bills and no insurance cover ....
Our Horse Box with just one of our beasts in it weighs in at around 1600Kg too. Unfortunately the Antara is not 'man enough' to tow it with 2 horses - that was why we have had a Trooper (3.5 Tonne) and a Nissan Terrano LWB (3 Tonne) in the past!
I have sent a query to Vauxhall as if this is not a typo definately needs highlighting. Will advise when i get a reply. I had the blue locking mechanism on mine and was fitted by dealer before collection. It towed a 1700Kg caravan to southern France and back. As when i purchased mine in 2012 there was no mention of 1300kg limit.
Hi Iain,Glad to hear someone else querying this figure, like you mine was dealer fitted when I purchased it in Spring of 2012 and there was no mention of a limit. The problem from my point of view is that I intend to keep the car for a good number of years and the 2012 online accessory information is no longer available. The bar has a GM plate giving a down force limit of 80kg but no towing limit, it would be interesting to find out if the latest bars have a limit figure. Coincidentally the brown handbook that accompanied the tow bar also states 80kg but notowing limit.
I await with interest vx's reply and hope it is what we expect, otherwise there could be a number of unhappy Antara caravan owners seeking restitution.
Hi AntaraMatt,Discovered since this thread that plate & handbook have a D value which is used to calculate tow bar limit.
My vx bar has D=11 which with the weight of the car gives a towing limit for the bar in excess of 2000kg. With all the uncertainty regarding these bars might be looking into to make the bar sell easier.
