Hi all,
I own a Diesel 2.2 WAD CDTI 2013 Antara. From new it has always and only been serviced and worked on by my local Vauxhall dealer. I have a noise that sounds like some using a powered sandpaper drill to quickly touch, on and off, a piece of wood. It increases and decreases, dependant on speed of the car. Took it into dealer yesterday. Mechanic said he heard noise. Everything underneath was checked, bearings, wheels etc. All the was found was a split pin that seemingly was wrongly fitted. I was then told now okay. 150 yards from garage, took car back as noise still there.
Was told should come back when Covid-19 was over and they could do more in depth testing. Now very worried.
Any ideas. The car does not have any sign of oil leaks underneath, and where I park overnight is always clean.
Anyone got any ideas please.

Two things spring to mind, 1st transfer box, these are prone to failure on these cars. Second the shield on the inside of the front brake disks runs very close to the disk itself, if you get some corrosion on either the shield or disk they can rub and make a sort of sanding noise. You can normally only hear the shields when the window is open, I heard mine when my wife can to pick me up one day and it was obvious the noise was coming from the front wheels. Not had an issue with my transfer box but I guess you would feel some kind of vibration/noise inside the car. Hope this helps Richy

A few years ago mine made a noise like a brake rubbing - like dirt caught between a pad and the disc. It varied with the speed of the car. Vauxhall traced it to a defective/seized prop shaft bearing at the diff. The bearing was changed and the noise disappeared. They had not encountered this before.

Len,
They tested it first by lubricating the bearing and then driving it. The noise stopped for a while, which led to its replacement. Vauxhall UK's technical department liaised with my local VX dealer and - as a customer - I was completely satisfied. Good Luck.

Hi again Dulac.
Today my dealer did find a problem with the rear diff, so they are replacing it.
They also found particles of metal within the oil from the Transfer Box.
They are going to carry out the work under the hundred thousand mile warranty, otherwise,
even with my discount, would have cost over 3000.
Once again, many thanks for your help.
Cheers, Len.

Hi Richy,
just to let you know, my dealer has found noise from prop shaft diff, so they are replacing it.
I also asked them to check the oil in the Transfer Box and they did find small particles of metal in it.
When they do the diff they are going to change the Transfer Box oil.
Again, thanks very much for your help.
Cheers, Len.

Hi Len

Thanks for the feedback and glad you got it sorted. Thank goodness for warranty.

Yes, when I changed my fluids at 50k miles, the oil in the gearbox and diff looked ok, but the transfer box oil was definitely discoloured. So the transfer box fluid change seems very sensible. I cant understand why the transfer box seems to take so much wear, I understood that most of the time the car runs with drive to the front wheels only. Unless someone knows otherwise ? Richy
