Thinking about getting an antara so thought I would pop on and say hi and ask a few questions...

1) I notice on doing a few searches that there appears to be an issue with transfer boxes - is this a common problem or are there loads of happy people out there running 4x4?

2) if this is a common problem do we know what causes it? I am coming from having a freelander and the problems there were caused by ageing VCUs and made worse by odd matched tyres.

3) i notice problems with the M32 gearbox, are these as bad on here as on other cars or do they seem to be ok?

No doubt I will be back with more

Cheers all,

Hi Geodark

I think their are a lot of happy Antara people out there but their is also a lot of unhappy folks as well. I use my 2013 2.2 manual 4x4 for towing and frankly i'm pretty impressed with it as a tow car. Mine has done around 53k now and no issues so far with the transfer box, however I have replaced the gearbox and transfer box oils twice. Once when I serviced the car at 50k and the second time when I changed the starter motor, which requires removal of the transfer box. I did notice when I changed the transfer box oil it was discoloured whilst the gearbox and diff appeared in good condition. I believe their is some kind of clutch arrangement in the rear axle which engages the rear wheels in the event of traction loss or high torque when pulling away. All I know is I towed my caravan off a flooded campsite once and it didnt even wheel spin. So something must be working.
This is a personal opinion but I believe the car is badly let down by the manufacturer and dealerships. I read lots of stories where people have problems and take the car to a dealer where they get presented with extreme charges to replace everything even slightly related to their problem. Richy

Sorry just seen your reply or I would have replied back sooner. I ended up getting a 12 plate one - picked it up last weekend, 2.2 manual AWD, in pearlescent white / ivory and have to say I am loving the car. And yeah, as soon as the winter is over the gear box and transfer box will be getting oil changes done.

Got a set of side steps on order, a tyre pressure monitoring system to go in (although I was under the impression that this should have had it - but I can't see it anywhere) and I have a new version of opcom on order.

What are these like for needing matched tyres? I notice on the rear that there are two different brands - has this caused any problems in the past the way they do on the freelanders?

Hi I did rotate my tyres around. The front were approx 60 percent worn and the rears had no wear so I swapped my fronts to the rear. I cant say I noticed any difference at all.
