Grey smoke now won't start

Antara 2.2cdti exclusive ss
77k
Monday night I did 200 mile motorway trip without the car missing a beat, Tuesday night I drove 8 miles got a greyish white smoke out of the exhaust and the car juddered to a hault on the roundabout they wouldn't start and developed a horrid knocking noise,
Got it home on a recovery truck, next morning I had a mobile mechanic look at it no fault codes on his computer and he eventually got it started with easy start in the air intake but it was chapping like mad maybe because of the easy start but it was smoking like it was burning oil and just died again, he said I needed a turbo so I went and got one online.
On further research and some input from a marine engineer the turbo is fine and spinning and the shaft has no play at all. I've since had another retired mechanic round to look at it and he had it running for a few minutes he unplugged the egr and it started but still knocking, he recons its the injectors or contaminated fuel or its not getting fuel.
Sounds like timing to me but I'm no mechanic.
I'm lost might have to go into the expensive vauxhall dealers.
Any help much appreciated, Charlie.

It sounds like the problem is developing now the management light is on, this indicates an electrical issue in the engine systems, I would suggest getting it diagnosed using a tech 2 machine, I would not think contaminated fuel given you had driven 200 miles the day before, as said injectors could be a player but need to identify fully before spending to much money on miss- diagnosis.

Oh forgot to ask did you actually fit the new Turbo?, could be seals as apposed to bearing failure, a leaking seal would allow oil contamination leading to lots of smoke.

"I must say this is a fantastic forum for help ;-/"

It used to be very good indeed until the ownership (and format) changed and regular contributors deserted and went elsewhere, including those who would have given you some technical guidance by return.

You might just have to go to a GM dealership which has all the facilities and software in-house, plus a direct link to Vauxhall UK's Technical Services team. You get what you pay for - particularly if you take all the time and hassle into account.
