Transfer Box Oil Change

I booked my car in today with a Vauxhall dealer, they seemed perplexed as to why I would change the oil in the transfer box as they stated no service schedule regarding the life of the oil, does this seem correct?

It does to me. There was a previous debate on this subject and as far as I am concerned I now request that the fluid is checked and topped-up if required by my VX dealer, where the car is serviced. It needed topping-up last time. After some research online I couldn't find an equivalent to the GM specified fluid, even though it is doubtful that GM manufacture it. For peace of mind I insisted that the GM product was used and the dealer had it sent over from one of his other branches. By all means drain and change if you prefer, but make sure the correct fluid is used and not something where "that'll do" rules - it's not worth the risk.

In a past life I used to use GM oil and filters on my Omega and they were less expensive than the usual suspects from Halfords.

I may just ask to top up then using correct recommend oil, they want 100.00 to change would hope and expect them to use the correct oil, but you never can tell.

The oil comes in 1 litre bottle & is about £30 form VX. I had mine changed when I had clutch & dmf done at 45000.

Any idea how much the transfer box holds in total?

While they are at it get them to check for early signs of play in the support bearing that holds the OSF driveshaft where it exits the transfer box. (See my posts on this ) My assumptions on failures of the transfer box are listed in my posts and after careful consideration feel that the main culprit is the close proximity of the bearing sitting directly over the exhaust pipe without adequate heat shield protection.
