My first MOT is due in September so I've been looking over the car in preparation. The rear silencer was rusty even before the car was a year old, matter of fact when it was at the dealers for its first service I complained about it but might as well have saved my breath. Got underneath to have a look and the pictures tell their own story.

I guess it doesn't matter but my petrol version has the same rusty end exhaust as yours. Mine is there years old and 25k miles at the time but at the time I did think that was quite poor. Will wait until it starts to blow before worrying too much.

There was a time when factory fitted exhausts were the best and lasted longest but no more it seems. (I read recently that tyre manufacturers who deliver to the factory have higher standards for their tyres to minimise wheel balance and alignment problems for the factory so I suppose we get the seconds).

I'm not finished with this exhaust yet - watch this space. damned if I'll spend a whole weeks beer tokens on a rear silencer

btw I take it the petrol Antara is doing OK, saw onw the other day and it was fairly skelping along.

Yes the petrol antara is going extremely well. I guess fortunately I don't have much to report on here as nothing too exciting has happened yet! The only thing I will be doing soon is to top up the underseal underneath, done it last year, when I noticed the exhaust, so just keeping an eye on that.

Victor I did earlier this year a job on my exhaust which looked just like yours, I wire brushed the rust off the clamp and hangers treated them with cure rust then hammerited them or used engine paint, cant recall on the pipe from the back box to the rusty clamp. Looked great I even waxoyled the subframe which was showing the same level of rust as yours.Today after reading you post I had another look underneath, oh yes just like yours, rusty and not looking good, the bloody Titanic looks better than this lot!
I can only assume this ferrous metal does not like the big heat differences when it goes into a Regen then cools down afterwards. Not sure how long before it all falls off, hopefully the next owner will have that problem.. To be honest as much as I like the car its a car that would be classed as special needs and demanding a carer 24/7. I am still wondering should I pay £400 for another year of warranty but I guess like the oil leaks they wont cover a rusted out exhaust.... **** car is worth a little over half what I paid for it in December 2016.
These are the pics I took before of the subframe treated, didnt take one of the exhaust sadly

I was under my antara yesterday, changing the oil and thought what a poor condition the exhaust was.
It was back in the 70's when an exhaust used to last 2 to 3 years. I have had cars up to ten years old on the existing exhaust.
Poor quality component steel I guess.

My wife says that I never listen or something like that !

The rear hanger on my 16 yr old Focus just perished (looked in the same nick as the Antara which is not 3 years old yet) I managed to put a bracket on it to get it through the MOT, but I doubt the Antara back end will last as well. The rest of the exhaust looks excellent, like you say cheap metal for the arse end pipe and brackets coupled with the high tempratures and this is what you get

Managed to get the exhaust cleaned up a bit, got some Kurust on it then the Hammerite black. Not finished with it yet but it's looking a lot better, reckon I'll run it for a while then decide on any further top coat.

I hear ya Volrider, spent a bit of time under mines looking at the sub-frame etc and the level of protection is pi$$ poor. I've never had a great deal of success with Waxoyl aerosol cans, they seem to clog up while the can is still half full. Suppose I could buy a gallon or so (about £40?) and use a big fence brush, certainly not going to pay about £450 for the 'pro' treatment.

I don't think I'll bother with the extended warranty for the reasons stated before. If something goes wrong with the engine I'll head for the nearest Bosch diesel service centre, those guys are specialising in engine fuel injection etc every day, much better methinks.
