I read that in April they will change the MOT for diesels so that it will fail if any visible smoke is seen on test. Now I guess if you havea DPF removed you will fail as old pre DPF cars do pump it out when the foot goes down.. I assume pre DPF cars will not fail but anything that is listed as DPF will! I see also they are marking up faults as Major down to Minor and thats down to the discretion of the tester as to what is a fail or an advisory?? I see this MOT creating more issues that it will resolve....

The motor trade is reviewing the draft version of the MOT manual which
is due for formal release around March(?). They're talking about failing
any DPF-equipped vevhicle if it emits ANY VISIBLE SMOKE from the
exhaust during an MOT.

They're all trying to generate a climate
of fear to stop people from gutting their DPF. In 2014 they introduced
the requirement to check the DPF during an MOT then in 2016 the
government reviewed the 2 years of MOT data which showed about 1,188
cases detected OVER THE TWO YEAR PERIOD.

The motor trade took
these figures and quoted them as over 1,800 and then rapidly escalated
that to claiming THOUSANDS of vehicles had been caught. They found an
ally in Simon Birkett, Director of Clean Air in London (CAL who said "
CAL estimates that tens of thousands and more likely hundreds of
thousands of diesel vehicles have been tampered with in this way" Oh
really? And all this from someone who is more interested in growing his
own empire than in providing accurate, verifiable data.

If an Antara is just about due for a regen and it has to be submitted to an MOT at that point will the result be affected?

Well said, Dulac, but they'll just want to sell you their cleaning treatment at £150 a time.

The DPF was never meant to be a smoke filter, from what I can find out their filtration level is at best 10 micron which is roughly the same size particles as talcum powder. If you look at the attached table you'll se for example that oil smoke is about .03 to 1 micron. If they start demanding this level of filtration from the DPF then the air going out the back of the car will be cleaner particle-wise than the air being drawn in the front. It's crazy and listen up folks, it's a big con.

So it seems that us diesel drivers are performing a public service - at our considerable expense - by removing particles from the air we all breathe (overall). The more miles we do the better it gets! Perhaps the Mayor of London and his coterie of tosspots need to be seized by the lapels and given a **** good shake.

The MOT runs at the same time as the annual service with my VX dealer - and I book at least a week in advance. I cannot force a regen or accurately predict when one is going to commence. The regulations are absurd and the people who advise government need their arses kicked while they are dragged back into the real world from the planet Zog (aka Westminster).

As an aside, if our Foreign Secretary gets his wish of a bridge across the Channel what happens when the RHDs meet the LHDs in the middle?

Back in the 90's LA County had a fleet of cars with the surface of the radiators made into catalytic converters running around the freeways to do just that, to clean the smoggy air as they drove along. The idea died a death though - they probably had V8 gas guzzler engines in them.
