The motor trade is reviewing the draft version of the MOT manual which
is due for formal release around March(?). They're talking about failing
any DPF-equipped vevhicle if it emits ANY VISIBLE SMOKE from the
exhaust during an MOT.
They're all trying to generate a climate
of fear to stop people from gutting their DPF. In 2014 they introduced
the requirement to check the DPF during an MOT then in 2016 the
government reviewed the 2 years of MOT data which showed about 1,188
cases detected OVER THE TWO YEAR PERIOD.
The motor trade took
these figures and quoted them as over 1,800 and then rapidly escalated
that to claiming THOUSANDS of vehicles had been caught. They found an
ally in Simon Birkett, Director of Clean Air in London (CAL who said "
CAL estimates that tens of thousands and more likely hundreds of
thousands of diesel vehicles have been tampered with in this way" Oh
really? And all this from someone who is more interested in growing his
own empire than in providing accurate, verifiable data.
