I'm looking for an OBD2 code reader (or EOBD really) that will do most European cars. They're all made in China and the likes of Autel run their database from the US where they concentrate primarily with American cars.

I did find a link to KLAVKARR <!--if gte mso 9>

I'm just looking for a plug-in scan tool, not too fancy but one that doesn't need its own batteries. Anyone with any recommendations?

This cheap and cheerful don't use batteries gets power when plugged in
I be used it on my daughters Ford KA and Mrs Peugeot on KA traced fault to lambda sensor cleared fault code reset management light. Peugeot traced fault to wrong spark plugs fitted causing intermittent misfire again cleared fault code reset management light both cars with no problems
So far touch wood not had to use it on the Antara

Thanks for the feedback BJS, good to know that you've actually had experience of working with that scanner and it's OK. Been looking at a few, have to watch out for fake scanners, ppl have bought them and then when they try ot update them on the Mfr's web site they get refused, because the serial number is not recognised. That seems to be from a trusted source where you bought youors from. Did you have to update yours whewn you got it?

I might be going for something with a little more functionality, say the Autophix OM126 but I'm in no rush, some time after Christmas will do now.

Not updated unit just used it as it is got what I needed from it
On the KA I ended fitting a lambda sensor spacer to increase tolerance on the CAT. The pollution fault code light never came back on and passed with flying colours on MOT emissions test for the next 4 years daughter then part x it on a golf as had 4 years driving experience by then
Mrs still has the Peugeot (petrol) and that's been a good reliable motor.
Don't know the Autophix OM126 but Iam sure you will do your homework before making a choice that suits your needs

Yep, decided on the OM126 and I've ordered one. It was a choice between between it and the Ancel AD410 at same price. Also looked at the Foxwell NT301 but it's just an Autel 519 in disguise.

I would have bought the Klavkarr if it had been a plug-in tool but it needs phone or tablet. I've no doubt it would be the best software database for European cars because virtually all the others are oriented towards the American market.

I also notice that Autel are possibly being sued by General Motors, Ford and Jaguar for "reverse engineering" their diagnostic software. That's going to be interesting.

Will do, Volrider, seems I should get it by the weekend. I expect it to read generic OBD2 / EOBD and Jap version of OBD. I don't expect it to read (m)any manufacturer-specific codes. One thing I will be checking is its date of manufacture since Autophix stopped providing updates in 2016. They say units are built to the latest version when they leave the factory so we'll see. TBH for generic scannning I don't see it making much of a difference.
