Hi everyone, I bought my antara diamond in May this year it was just 4 years old, everything was fine then the steering pump split, that was soon resolved as it was still under warranty at the time, however the engine light came on and stayed on, I am not good at all with cars and engines so I took it to my mechanic who has worked on all my cars in the past mainly all Vauxhall zafiras. He said it was the filter and that it would continue to happen on a regular basis. I am a nurse and I do use the motorway pretty often, I am beginning to feel like I have made a big mistake buying this car.
I have to say I went for a motorway run light didn't go off right away but 3 days later. My car is diesel, is there any solution to this issue ? My mechanic said I could have something removed but it would still do it at a later date

Welcome to the forum Jacqui. What do you mean by 'the engine light' and have you looked in your owner's manual to identify it correctly? There are lots of lights on the dashboard at startup and not all of them mean what you think they might.
If it is the diesel particle filter warning light staying on then the cause of this needs to be resolved as a matter of urgency, to avoid engine damage. If the filter is significantly blocked (and this depends on driving style and quality of fuel) it has to be cleaned out by a specialist. You can try driving non-stop for about 25 miles in 4th gear at not less than 2200 rpm and at a constant speed to generate the heat necessary to clean the unit before spending too much money. If it is a DPF fault bear in mind that previous owner(s) might not have followed the simple rules to keep it in good condition. This seems to be a common problem with used Antaras - basic neglect.

Hi it is the orange light that looks like an engine, it has now gone off, when I bought the car in May it had 1 previous owner and had full service history. I love the car but I don't want to end up with this happening regularly. Thank you for your response it is definitely helpful if it happens again. I had a zafira for 13 years never had a scrap of trouble with it.

Hi love it is the orange light that is at side of speedometer but it looks like an engine. My mechanic said it is this filter issue and he feels it will continue to happen, his suggestion was to drive down motorway at speed twice a week, I've been driving over 30 years never had so much as a parking fine so I don't fancy getting a speeding fine.
Thank you for your reply love much appreciated.

If it is the engine light and if it keeps going off I would not worry .wait till it stays on permanent.does the car drive any different when it comes on .unless the light stays on they can not diagnose it and find any faults .like I said if the car drives no different when it comes on and then goes out don't worry to much Edited by: swinton

Thanks love for reply, it stayed on approx 3 days car wasn't driving sluggish or any change at all. I took it down the motorway for a good few miles it didn't go off then but after making a few trips to a storage unit and back and forth it went off then.
Hope it doesn't become an issue as I do like the car.
Once again thank you for your help and advice, I do appreciate it, I've been drivng a long time but have no idea about engines in cars.

Hi jacqui
If you switch off the engine and hear the cooling fans running the Antara is doing a regeneration clearing out the filter in the exhaust this can happen a few times before the DPF ( exhaust filter) light comes up you don't have to drive like a racing driver to let the filter get cleaned just when your driving keep the revs above 2000 rpm by selecting a lower gear if manual only change up to 3rd or if auto put gear selector in lower gear so this keeps revs up even if your only driving at 30 mph you can not tell when the Antara needs a regeneration of the exhaust filter but normally is about every 500 miles
It's just a matter of getting to know how the Antara works. If the light comes on just take it for a run or when you are going out use the 2000rpm for about 10 to 15 mind and once the light has gone out you know you have another 500 miles to go before exhaust filter needs cleaning again with tell tale signs like fans running once engines switched off
Hope this put your mind a rest as this is the normal with new diesel vehicles now thanks to the EU
