Do we know if the onboard display is accurate? Trying enough day as it was having my first chemo, we sat and watched the mpg steadily drop from 27mpg to 22 mpg when we stopped ! Any ideas please.

While the MPG indicator needle was dropping fast was the speedometer needle rising faster?

It happens during and after a DPF regen as a classic sympton.
However, with regard to accuracy, mine was showing an average consumption of around 32 mpg over a long period. The other day I reset the dash reading to zero and within a relatively short period of motorway driving the average consumption rose to 37.9 and stayed there. So, if in doubt reset it from time to time and be easy with your right foot (and change gear rather than let the engine labour in 6th).

Funny enough I did reset it a few days ago on a motorway trip, we got to 40 mpg but it quickly came back to its usual 27 mpg until today.

Maybe in the middle of a regen,as mentioned. I get average 38 mpg 50-50 motorway and local running.

Also it depends on your style of driving. Drive like a nun, allow the speed to build up slowly, slow down when you see red light on approach, don't go over 60mph on the motorway and you will probably do a lot better.

My wife says that I never listen or something like that !

I remember a story in the paper about motorists reporting they were passed by a car at very high speed and it was a nun who was driving with another one in the front passengers seat. Turned out it was Volvo cars with the first of the high-back seats.
